Hash Generator

Calculate SHA-2 hashes of text or of a file on your device, for checksums, integrity checks and cache keys. Hashing uses the browser's built-in Web Crypto API.

Input
Output
Only the SHA-2 family is offered: MD5 and SHA-1 are broken and unsuitable for security. Plain hashes are also not suitable for storing passwords; use Argon2id, scrypt or bcrypt on your server.

How to generate a hash

  1. Type or paste text, or choose a file.
  2. SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 are calculated together.
  3. Choose hex (lowercase or uppercase) or Base64 output.
  4. Copy a hash, or paste an expected hash to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Why aren't MD5 and SHA-1 offered?

Both are broken for security purposes: attackers can create different inputs with the same hash. The Web Crypto API deliberately leaves MD5 out, and DevKOM only offers the SHA-2 family.

Can I use SHA-256 to store passwords?

No. Fast hashes are easy to brute-force. Store passwords with a slow, salted algorithm such as Argon2id, scrypt or bcrypt on your server.

Is text hashed as UTF-8?

Yes. Text is encoded to UTF-8 bytes before hashing, matching tools like sha256sum and most programming languages.
